Calling all tricycles, fixies, Burly Wagons, cargo bikes, road bikes, metrofiets, road bikes, and unicycles!  The Northwest District Association (NWDA) wants Portlanders of all ages to get behind their handlebars and ride to their Second Annual Bike-In Movie at Wallace Park on September 8th, 2012.

With its quiet, tree-lined streets and nearly hill-less bike boulevards, Northwest Portland is the perfect neighborhood for family cycling.  The summer nights couldn’t be more inviting for a pleasant ride through the Victorian houses of the historic Alphabet District.  Still, the streets surrounding Couch and Wallace Parks are clogged with cars searching for parking during summer concerts, movies, and the popular Swift Watch, creating nuisances and safety hazards for neighbors and visitors alike.

The NWDA took action to address these community concerns, with support of a small neighborhood grant from Neighbors West-Northwest and the Office of Neighborhood Involvement, they are hosting an event that will encourage – and reward – people who choose to ride instead of drive.  Like any other Movie-in-the-Park night around the city, Portland Parks & Rec will be putting up the big screen on the grassy lawns of Wallace Park.  All are welcome and the event is family-friendly and free to all.  “Seating” is first-come, first serve – although, lounging and lying about on blankets and lawn chairs is a more apt description of the scene.  Attendees can enjoy free popcorn or are welcome to bring their own (non-alcoholic) beverages and snacks.   A band and a climbing wall will also entertain folks from 6:30 p.m. until dark (7:30 p.m.) when the movie begins.

But this night is all about the bike.  The Safety and Livability Committee worked with Parks and Rec to secure the movie rights to the bike-themed cult classic “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.”  Grassroots experts non-profit Shift to Bikes are supplying plenty of bike parking racks near the movie area.  The BTA will be on hand to pass out maps and resources for new cyclists, and the friendly mechanics from REI will provide free tune-ups for troublesome tires and squeaky brakes.  The NWDA booth will have discounted children’s helmets on sale for $5 (cash or credit card) No worries if you forget to pack a picnic: Taco Pedaler, Portland’s locavore bike-powered foodcart favorites, will pedal their cart to the park offering their legendary fresh tacos and dillas for sale.

But best of all, just showing up with your bike gives you a chance to win fabulous prizes!  Every person arriving by cycle will receive a complimentary raffle ticket when they park their bike at the bike parking station.  Dozens of winners will get their pick of bike lights, accessories, bells, safety gear, and a selection of fantastic crafts from local artisans.

So get in the spirit and pedal on down to the neighborhood’s first Bike-In Movie!  Maybe you’ll win a prize!  Maybe you’ll spend $2.50 and get a great taco.  But you’ll definitely have a great time.

    Hi Eliza,
Thanks so much for letting us know about this problem! We are talking about ways to keep bikes parked in designated parking areas – potentially with small signs and maps this year, but we’re also exploring the possibility of getting some temporary bike racks to the park for the next Swift season. Parks did recently put up a sign about the park restroom locations.

The Bike-In Movie has incentives (raffle tickets) for users who park their bikes at designated racks, so I hope that this will alleviate the parking issues for this Saturday.

Thanks again for taking the time to let us know about this issue and for being the eyes on the street for your neighborhood!

Love that we are encouraging cycling in our neighborhood and to swift events.
Any way to publicize where bike racks are during swift season?
We have folks tethering their bikes to homeowners railings, fences, trees etc while there are bike racks close to the portables at Chapman. When I have suggested to cyclists to use the parks’ racks instead of our private property, I have gotten some attitude in the past.
We also have viewers using are yards as public toilets, so if there is any way to publicize the public bathrooms in the park that would be helpful too.
